Federal district court Judge Howell has ruled that AI-created works are ineligible for Copyright because AI Systems lack human authorship. The case centered around an image generated solely by an AI System called the Creativity Machine. System’s owner Stephen Thaler attempted to register with the US Copyright Office and was rejected. As AI continues to grow, advance, and become more autonomous the courts will need to draw difficult guidelines around what amounts of human authorship allow for copyright eligibility.
